1. Information for visitors.
1.1 Cookies.
This website makes use of cookies. This is a common practice and the majority of websites use cookies to allow the website publisher to check whether or not the user has made previous visits to the site. This cookie is read on a repeat visit and allows the site to remember your username and password, so that you do not have to re-enter the details.
1.2 Database technology.
Database technology is used to store details of, and relevant to, Games, Tournaments and player homepages. It is NOT USED to store credit card details. If you choose to pay and become a Full Member, we make use of third party companies, PayPal and WorldPay, both of whom make full and proper use of encryption, and who take responsibility for handling sensitive financial data such as credit card details.
1.3 Email address.
ChessWorld uses your Email address to notify you when one of your opponents makes a move. Additionally, for players who have not returned to the site for a period of time, we may, at our discretion, send you information or invitations to return to the site. If you do not wish to receive such Emails, uncheck the appropriate option on the My Stuff ... My Email page and then press the Submit button. Additionally, Tournament invitations, messages from Opponents, and other Game/Tournament related information may make use of your Email address. If you do not wish to receive any communications from the site, you may remove your Email address from the My Stuff ... My Email page and press Submit.
1.4 IP Address.
Your IP address is a unique number which is assigned to every computer on the Internet. In general, we do not link IP addresses to anything that can identify you personally, ensuring you can remain anonymous. However, you should be aware that we will attempt to use IP addresses to identify users when we feel it is necessary to protect our services and other users.
2. What is a cookie?
When you enter this site your computer will automatically be issued with a cookie. Cookies are text files that identify your computer, rather than the individual user, to our server. The majority of web sites do this whenever a user visits them in order to track traffic flows.
Cookies may be used to check areas of the site that have been visited and may also record the duration of each visit. When you supply any personal information to ChessWorld, usually, but not exclusively, via the My Stuff ... My Details page, we have legal obligations towards you in the way that we deal with that data. We must collect the information fairly, that is, we must explain how we will use it, (see the notices on particular web pages that let you know why we are requesting the information), and advise you if we propose, or need, to pass the information on to a third party.
In general, any information you provide to ChessWorld will only be used within ChessWorld. It will never be supplied to anyone outside the ChessWorld without first obtaining your consent, unless we are obliged or permitted by law to disclose it. You should be aware that if you post or send offensive or inappropriate content anywhere on or to ChessWorld or otherwise engage in any disruptive behaviour on ChessWorld, and ChessWorld considers such behaviour to be serious and/or repeated, ChessWorld may use whatever information that is available about you to stop such behaviour. This may include informing relevant third parties such as your Employer, School, E-mail provider or any other appropriate Authority about the content and your behaviour.
We will ensure that all personal information supplied via the Registration form, or later via the My Stuff ... My Details page, is held securely, in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998. This information forms part of your public homepage and may be visible when other users visit your homepage.
4. Access to your personal information.
Your personal information is accessible from the My Stuff ... My Details page. You may edit this information at any time.
5. Users aged 16 and under.
To comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act 1998 (COPPA), this site is only available to users who are aged at least 13 years old. If you are aged under 13, you are not allowed to access, or make use of, any service provided by ChessWorld.
All players aged 16 or under must comply with our child privacy policy. This instructs you that if you are under 13, you cannot make use of any service provided by ChessWorld. It also instructs you that if you are aged between 13 and 16 inclusive, you must get the permission of your Parent/Guardian before you provide, or attempt to provide, any personal information to ChessWorld. Users without such consent are not allowed to provide us with personal information.
